Volkswagen Compact Coupe “concept” blends sport and hybrid

Written by nitram on January 13, 2010 – 10:45 -

Volkswagen New CompactThe Volkswagen Touareg hybrid is now just a few months away from production, but the crew in Wolfsburg are staying busy by cranking out small concept vehicles with hybrid powertrains. The latest that debuts here at the Detroit Auto Show this morning is called the New Compact Coupe (NCC), a handsome hybrid coupe that looks remarkably production-ready. Designed to slot globally between the not-for-North-America Scirocco and the rakish CC, we could see a serial version of the NCC competing well here in the States with coupes like the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

In showcar guise, the NCC features Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter TSI inline-four with 148 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid system uses the same basic architecture (if not dimensions) as the recent L1 and Up-Lite concepts from Frankfurt and Los Angeles. In this case, a 20-kilowatt electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and the seven-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox. A 1.1 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery in the back of the car provides electrical energy storage for electric drive, electric boost and regenerative braking. The system also allows for the complete decoupling of the transmission for enhanced coasting even at highway speeds, although it isn’t immediately clear from the press release if the electric motor will push the NCC along for extended periods as it does with Volkswagen Audi Group’s Porsche Cayenne Hybrid system. Either way, VW is estimating the NCC’s mileage at 45 miles per gallon based on EPA test procedures with the EU numbers coming in at 56 mpg (U.S.) and 98 g/km of CO2. Acceleration to 60 mph is ballparked at 8.1 seconds and top speed is pegged at 141 mph.

The car itself is virtually the same size as the current Jetta except for wheelbase length and overall height (the concept has three more inches between the axles and the roof is two inches lower), and it may well be a preview of what to expect from the next-generation Jetta. Recently there have been rumors circulating that VW plans to revive the Jetta coupe, a model that hasn’t been in the lineup since the late ’80s. A production version of this poor-man’s Audi A5 could well be that car, although VW officials aren’t talking. Similarly, the forthcoming Tennessee-built New Medium Sedan is expected with both diesel and hybrid powertrains and the same could be the case for the next Jetta. While you wait, you can check out our high-res gallery below and VW’s official press verbiage available after the jump.

Chevrolet Aveo RS Concept Previews GM’s New Ford Fiesta Rival

Written by nitram on January 12, 2010 – 15:40 -

Chevrolet Aveo RS ConceptThe 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week will host the world premiere of the Chevrolet Aveo RS Concept car handing us our first look at the next-generation Aveo that will be sold on both sides of the pond competing with superminis like the Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris.

Longer, wider and more spacious than the current production Aveo, the five-door concept adopts several styling cues including the dual element grille, round tail lamps and fender flares from other Chevrolet models such as the Spark and Cruze.

Being an RS version, the concept model sports several unique features like the 19-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels that cover the large Boracay Blue brake calipers, a roof spoiler, a specific front bumper with large air vents, exposed motorcycle-inspired rear taillamps that feature tinted aluminum housings and a rear diffuser with a center-mounted exhaust and chrome exhaust tips.

Chevrolet Aveo RS ConceptThough virtually production ready, the concept model’s interior has been adorned in leather with contrasting blue stitching, special decorative trim and a pair of sport front seats.

Under the hood, the Aveo RS houses the same 138-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four Ecotec engine that will be available in the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze. Power is transfered to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

Needless to say, the series production model will be far less aggressive in the details inside and out, though there is a chance that we might see a similarly styled and powered sporty RS model added in the Aveo’s range.

GM said that the production Aveo will be manufactured at its Orion Assembly in Orion Township, Michigan starting from 2011.

MINI Officially Confirms Series-Production of Coupe and Speedster Models!

Written by nitram on September 7, 2009 – 10:15 -

Mini Coupe ConceptWe’ve yet to see the MINI Coupe Concept in the flesh – let alone it’s Speedtser twin that has yet to be revealed, but parent company BMW officially confirmed today that both models will enter series production and that they are to be built at MINI’s Oxford Plant in the UK. The important announcement was made by Dr.Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management, BMW AG, during his two-day visit to the firm’s UK operations earlier this week.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson commented: “The production of the two new MINI models is very good news for Oxford, and for the UK car industry. British drivers have had a long love affair with the MINI and I’m sure that this will continue for many years to come.”

Mini Coupe ConceptThe company said that the start dates for the production of the two new sporty MINIs that will join the existing line of Hatch, Clubman and Convertible models, all of which are made at the Oxford plant, will be confirmed at a later date.

The two seater coupe and its drop-top sibling will most likely be available with the 1.6-liter turbocharged MINI John Cooper Works power train that pumps out 211HP and a peak torque of 260Nm (192 lb-ft) or 280Nm (206 lb-ft) with the overboost function.

However, we wouldn’t be surprised if MINI also offers the standard MINI Cooper S’ 175HP 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol while a high-performance diesel option should be considered a possibility.

New York: Acura ZDX aimed squarely at BMW X6

Written by nitram on April 14, 2009 – 09:49 -

Acura ZDX ConceptMeet the Acura ZDX concept, or shall we say, a very close to production version of the Japanese firm’s forthcoming crossover that is due to go on sale in the States in the fall of 2009. While most of us were questioning BMW’s decision to add the X6 in its lineup, the Honda folks quickly picked up the idea and came up with their own four-door coupe crossover – we know, it sounds ridiculous…

“The ZDX is truly a luxury performance coupe – plus,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. “The emotional coupe styling coupled with a luxurious and dramatic interior and surprising versatility, allows the ZDX to define its own segment and attract an entirely new customer.”

While we wouldn’t actually fall in love with its exterior styling, we must admit that Acura’s designers seem to have done a better job than their Bavarian counterparts. An interesting detail are the hidden rear door handles that are concealed in the C-pillar. Aside from a few minor details such as the headlamp and tail light housings, the exhaust tail pipes and quite possibly, the front bumper, don’t expect to see other differences on the production model.

Acura ZDX ConceptAt 192.4 inches or 4887mm long, the ZDX prototype is less than two inches longer than the MDX (190.7 in.) but nearly 12 inches longer than the RDX (180.7 in. or 4590 mm). However, with a height of 61.8 inches, it’s also around 7 and 4-inches respectively lower than its two crossover siblings.

Inside, the five-seater ZDX is virtually production ready though don’t expect to see the hand-stitched leather dashboard and the two-tone trim, or at least not in the basic versions of the crossover. The prototype’s cabin also features a panoramic glass roof which runs the entire length of the vehicle.

Acura said that this fall’s production version of the ZDX will be powered by a V6 engine mated to an all-new, 6-speed automatic transmissio that drives all four-wheels through Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system.

Geneva Preview: Rolls-Royce 200EX Concept

Written by nitram on February 24, 2009 – 10:37 -

Rolls-Royce 200EX ConceptRolls-Royce Motor Cars will unveil its latest experimental car, called 200EX, at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March 2009.

200EX is a design study for a contemporary four-door saloon and shows the direction for RR4, a new model series from Rolls-Royce due for production in 2010.

PHILOSOPHY

Experimental models have always played a significant role in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, from the first – 1EX, built in 1919 – to the most recent – 101EX, built in 2006. Unlike a concept car, the experimental models developed by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars have always been fully functioning vehicles, residing in a tangible world of wood, leather and metals rather than clay and foam. EX cars offer designers and engineers the opportunity for real-world innovation and have been used to showcase new components and engineering techniques as well as exterior and interior designs. “Modern automotive engineering is a balance of creativity, innovation and application. 200EX is an opportunity to assess these new ideas”, explains Helmut Riedl, Director of Engineering.
