Paris Preshow: New Porsche 911 Speedster
Written by nitram on September 30, 2010 – 12:52 -
Celebrating its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show alongside the new 911 GTS models, will be a new member of Porsche’s long-running sports car family, the 911 Speedster, which will be launched onto the market in December 2010.
The car might be new, but the Speedster name is old, in fact far older than the 911 itself as it was first used on the classic 356 model of 1953. Porsche revived the Speedster in 1989 with a limited run edition based on the 911 Carrera 3.2, followed in 1992/1993 by a newer model based on the Type 964 911 Carrera. According to Porsche, two examples of the Type 993 911 Speedster were also built to special order.
Designed and conceived by the Porsche Exclusive department in Stuttgart, the new 911 Convertible-based Speedster pays a styling homage to its predecessors featuring a 60mm lowered and more rakish windscreen as well as the characteristic ‘double-bubble’ hardcover behind the cabin for the manual soft top.
The car’s “chopped down” appearance is further enhanced by the use of the Carrera 4 body with its 44 millimeter wider rear stance.
In addition to these changes, the 911 Speedster also benefits from a series of other styling upgrades including a bespoke front spoiler, specific side-skirts, a distinct rear apron, tinted front lights, black headlight surrounds and black windscreen border. It also features a set of retrotastic Fuchs-style rims and color-coordinated black stone guards ahead of the rear wheels, which are reminiscent of prior editions of the 911.
Porsche developed an exclusive “Pure Blue” finish for the Speedster but upon request, the car is also available in Carrara White, at no extra cost.
Interior modifications are limited to the specific color and trim options such as the black leather upholstery with color-keyed elements.
Power for the new Speedster comes from the 911 GTS’s tweaked 3.8-litre flat six that delivers 408-horsepower, or 23HP more in comparison with the 911 Carrera S. The firm’s seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission is in charge of delivering power to the rear axle which is fitted with a standard differential lock. Other standard features include the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).
While Porsche did not release performance figures, the Stuttgart-based automaker said the Speedster returns an average fuel consumption of 10.3lt /100 km (22.8 mpg US).
Commemorating its famous 1950′s forebear, the German firm will build just 356 examples of the new Speedster. In Germany, the 911 Speedster is priced at €201,682 (about US$263,700), while in the UK, pricing is set at £144,100 (USD$224,700 or €171,900). US pricing has not yet been announced.
New 2011 Porsche Cayenne CLR 550 GT by Lumma Design
Written by nitram on May 17, 2010 – 15:31 -
The new Cayenne is significantly prettier than the lumpy, first-generation model Porsche released upon us. Now it resembles a legitimate X5 competitor. Still, Lumma Design wants to take it a step further with its wide-body CLR 550 GT.
For now, though, it’s all just renderings.
Lumma is crafting an add-on lip spoiler with integrated fog lights, LED running lights, headlight trim, and a ton of carbon fiber bits for the Cayenne’s front end.
Its carbon-Kevlar hood will feature functional cooling vents and be raised slightly to cover the windshield wipers (reducing drag) around the cowl area.
Down the sides you can see Lumma’s signature extra-wide fenders covering 22- or 23-inch wheels, between which are special air-directing side skirts helping to cool the rear brakes.
At the rear is the rest of Lumma’s kit, which is a rear bumper, taillight trim, and a diffuser housing a very unique three-tipped exhaust.
Above that, there’s a carbon spoiler mid-hatch and another strip of carbon which somehow “provide additional power”. Downforce, I understand, but can anyone explain how two lines of carbon fiber make power?
If you’re looking for real power to go with the looks, you’ll have to contact the German folks over at Lumma Design. This kit is purely for show.

Porsche ups the Power Ante with New 911 Turbo S, Churns Out 530HP
Written by nitram on February 11, 2010 – 15:02 -
This year’s Geneva Salon in March will see Porsche performing the world debut of a new top model in the 911 range, the Turbo S that boasts a more powerful boxer engine as well as an array of features that are otherwise optional on the standard Turbo model.
At the heart of the new 911 Turbo S is a six-cylinder boxer unit boosted by two exhaust gas turbochargers with variable turbine geometry, with an increase in power over the standard Turbo model by 30HP to 530HP, while maximum torque is also lifted by 70Nm or 51.6 lb-ft to 700Nm or 516 lb-ft.
The 911 Turbo S is offered exclusively with Porsche’s seven-speed double-clutch PDK transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shift levers that conveys power to all-four wheels.
In conjunction with Launch Control on the Sport Chrono Package Turbo likewise featured as standard, the Turbo S accelerates to 100 km/h (62mph) in 3.3 seconds and reaches 200 km/h (124mph) in 10.8 seconds, while topping out at 315 km/h or 195 mph.
Porsche claims that despite the increase in power and dynamic performance, the new Turbo S’ combined fuel economy of 11.4 lt/100 km (equal to 20.6mpg US and 24.8mpg UK) is identical to the standard 911 Turbo.
Standard features include Porsche’s Torque Vectoring system with a mechanical differential lock on the rear axle, Ceramic Composite Brakes, Dynamic Bending Lights, 19-inch wheels in RS Spyder design with central locking, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, adaptive sports seats, cruise control, a CD/DVD changer and exclusive twin-tone leather upholstery in Black/Crema or Black/Titanium Blue.
The new Porsche 911 Turbo S will go on sale in both Coupe and Convertible body styles from May 2010 with prices in Germany (including 19% tax) set at €173,241 and €184,546 respectively.
Gemballa Tornado 750 GTS: One Big, Bad Modded Porsche Cayenne
Written by nitram on April 25, 2009 – 09:23 -
Sometimes, a vehicle’s name is worth more than a thousand photos or a thousand words. Like, when you hear the name Gemballa Tornado 750 GTS, you know that what you’re about to see ain’t going to be pretty or puny… In this case, we’re talking about Gemballa’s heavily modified Cayenne proposal that comes with “Mad-Max” looks, an upgraded turbocharged V8 engine with 750HP and on top of that, a weight reduction of 250kg or 551 pounds over the standard Cayenne Turbo upon which it is based.
The extensive engine mods include the increase of the V8′s displacement from 4.8- to 5.0-liters and the fitment of fortified forged pistons, special connecting rods, racing turbochargers along with a new air intercooler plus a remapping of the ECU. The result is an impressive output of 750HP at 6,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 1,050Nm or 774-lbs/ft at 3200 rpm. The Tornado 750 GTS accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed in excess of 300 km/h or 187mph.
To put all that power on the road in a politically correct manner, Gemballa’s engineers outfitted the Cayenne with a sports suspension that includes an adjustable coilover kit that allows the lowering of the car by up to 70mm. The Tornado 750 GTS rides on a set of extra light 22-inch alloy wheels shod in 335/25 Z22 high performance tires while stopping power is provided by a new braking system with 6-piston brake callipers and 420mm discs at the front axle and 4-piston brake callipers with 380mm discs at the rear axle.
On the outside, Gemballa’s team turned the Cayenne into a vehicle that could easily have had a role in the movie Death Race. Aerodynamic accessories aside, one of the highlights is the bonnet which has been ‘fused’ with the front wings and now opens as a whole.
Inside, Gemballa opted for a four-seat layout while the cabin has been upgraded with new materials and a redesigned center console hosting the lifted gearbox and the Data Control System.
The German tuning house said that the Tornado 750 GTS will be built in a limited number of 50 units with prices set at €400,000 or about $520,000
Shanghai 2009: Porsche Panamera finally gets its public unveiling
Written by nitram on April 21, 2009 – 09:30 -
Underscoring the increasing importance of the Chinese market to automakers around the world, Porsche has unveiled its newest model at the Shanghai Motor Show. We’ve seen official images of the Panamera for at least six months and even had a chance to ride in it last month in Germany but this is the first time the public has been able to see it in person.
The true four-seat Panamera goes on sale this Fall with normally aspirated and turbocharged versions of the company’s 4.8-liter direct-injected V8 in all markets. Some markets will also get Audi’s new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a hybrid system will join the lineup in 2011. Check out our in-depth run-down of the technology in the Panamera which will have to hold you over until we get to drive the Panamera this summer. We hope to have more live shots soon.
